Warm Summer Days

Posted on June 24th, 2005 under Radio, News

With the current warm summer days, my desire to post updates seems to have mostly vanished. So, once again, this will be one of those all encompassing posts that put a lot of random things together and just update you mostly on what’s going on.

Research work continues and I’ve spent the week mostly focusing on the user interface and dealing with monitoring a folder in windows, creating backup files before they are modified, and generally creating code that can be reused once we understand fully the constraints we’re under. Working with Visual Studio is continuously a chore but it’s good. I’m understanding a lot more each day and in all reality, the .NET framework is very similar to Cocoa’s Core Foundation in that it attempts to help you by providing the basic functions you need. We’ve also been coming to realize that Visual Studio 2005 (currently in beta) is a much better IDE than Visual Studio 2003 .NET. Perhaps it’s simply a re-organization of dialogs, but we’re finding ourselves more productive than before.

Greg and I had our second radio show yesterday. We played mostly indie songs and generally had fun, although for some reason, I really wasn’t too into the show in the second half. Maybe it was being tired, or simply I had chosen too many down beat songs. The playlist is up online in my radio section if you’re interested and want to post your advice.

Monday Blues

Posted on April 25th, 2005 under Radio, News

Today’s been mostly a blur. I really don’t know how the day progressed as rapidly as it did. Work was accomplished, classes attended, meetings adjourned, meals eaten. At the same time, the stress level simply rises and with only two more weeks of classes (less now), the work is definitely piling up.

Of interest, there was a WHCL meeting this evening where the general manager and production manager spoke of upcoming changes and events. This upcoming Saturday, WHCL, IMF, CAB, and the ISC are putting on the annual May Day event on Minor field (that’s right outside my window). This is the second year it has been organized and while this year the artists being brought in are less known, it should be a blast - providing it doesn’t rain on Saturday. Yes, if you’re paying attention closely or are good with dates, you’ll know that Saturday is actually April 30th. That’s the logic that prevails at Hamilton!

In addition, it looks like WHCL will be broadcasting this summer, albeit with a very limited schedule. I’m not sure exactly what the schedule will be (probably 2-4 hours a day) but I’m going to try with all my might (read: ask) for my own show over the summer. John and Greg might even become co-hosts! Also of interest, WHCL has some really snazzy t-shirts that will be going on sale. In all honesty, they look very cool (and come in 5 colors too)! Being a DJ, we can get them below cost so I’ll hopefully be picking up a couple and maybe we’ll even have a few to give away on our show!

It also looks like WHCL is going to be getting a digital music library that will allow us to broadcast 24/7 unmanned. This means that potentially, there will no longer be dead air before our show (that is if I can keep the same time next year). Of course, this won’t occur until next year once the new system is in place but I’m pretty excited about it. In fact, the station is looking for some new e-board members and I might apply for one of the less intensive positions such as member-at-large.

So those are mainly the new WHCL things in work. Don’t forget- tomorrow Sean and I are on-air at 10.30 am for an hour and half of mayhem and music. If you missed last weeks post on the station, be sure to check it our here for some awesome pictures!

The Makings of the On-Air Stylings of the Fickle Finn and Sonic Smee

If you didn’t know that Sean and myself have been on the air for the past semester, shame on you! It’s OK though as I’m sure you’ll make it up by listening to our final two shows for the semester (see the sidebar for more details)… Anyway, I realized yesterday that I’ve been talking a lot lately about our radio show, The On-Air Stylings of the Fickle Finn and Sonic Smee, and figured that I’d take my camera along to today’s show and give those not attending Hamilton a glimpse into the world of WHCL 88.7.

WHCL is a not-for-profit college radio station, broadcasting throughout the academic year. We’re off during breaks and usually during the beginning of the semester when scheduling begins. Being a college station, we play mainly alternative, indie, and rock music but every DJ is allowed to play whatever they’d like on their show, as long as they follow FCC guidelines such as no swearing in songs until after 10pm.
