High Priority 1.11 Released

Posted on February 2nd, 2006 under High Priority, News

After the tremendous amount of feedback I received from High Priority 1.1, I’ve spent the past week working on a simple maintenance release to fix some of the bugs that were noted. Before I get to what’s new and changed, I just want to point out two reviews of High Priority that have made my day (not to mention the 130 plus indviduals who have added me to their del.icio.us bookmarks).

The first, by Douglas Bowman, is an entry he posted on his web site. Titled Mac app: High Priority, Bowman writes about his positive experience he’s had with the program. As a result of this posting, I’ve received well over 1500 referral visits, as well as even received an email from Hamilton’s director of electronic media congratulating me.

The second review (in French), by Michel Dumais of Branchez-Vous!, is an opinion piece he wrote where he describes falling in love with the program and it’s simplicity. My favorite passage is when he writes: “Il existe de ces logiciels avec lesquels on tombe littéralement en amour. Pas parce qu’ils sont complexes, pas parce qu’ils sont des usines à gaz. Non, tout simplement parce qu’ils remplissent leur mission, et rien d’autre. Un peu comme High Priority. Plus simple que ça, tu meurs. Mais qu’il est pratique.” Roughly translated into English, this means: “There exists programs with which you literally fally in love with. Not because they are complex nor are gas factories, but because they simply do their task and nothing else. A bit like High Priority. Any more simply, you’d die. But, boy is it handy.”

It’s these types of articles and emails that make developing fun. Sure, it’s nice to receive a bit of money on the side to use for discretionary purchases or put towards a future goal (travel!), but it’s the emails where people write how they’ve found the program useful and wouldn’t use a Mac without it that make your day. Anyway, enough egoistic writing. Let me fill you in on what’s changed with version 1.11:

I’m also working on version 1.2 which will feature some additional goodies. There’s no time frame for it’s release yet (I’m working hard on some other commitments… Honors Thesis, anyone?) but it will feature second tier sorting, more display options, and hopefully a more improved edit dialog.

Incommunicado, Part I: “If you’d like technical support in English, please hang up.”

At this moment, I’m fed up and annoyed with two companies that previously, I had been very happy with: TextDrive and Cingular. I rely on both, TextDrive to maintain my web presence and promote the simple shareware applications I write, and Cingular to stay in touch with the rest of the world (as Hamilton’s gotten rid of landline phone service). Both have failed me exactly when I need them the most. Continue reading »

High Priority 1.1 Released

Just a quick post to mention the release of High Priority 1.1, my menu extra that allows you to access, edit, create, and remove your iCal To Do items directly from the menu bar. Version 1.1 is a free upgrade to all users and features the following improvements:

An Update

Posted on January 17th, 2006 under News, Development

Yesterday was the first day of my final semester here at Hamilton and while bittersweet, I’m both excited about this semester, as well as the fact that I’ll be graduating in the near future. Hamilton’s been a wonderful environment and a lot of fun has been had, but it’s time to move on and ultimately, at least for a little while, enter the real world. Plus, I’m closing out my time here with some great classes: Robotics, HR Management, and my Honors Thesis. I’ll probably write more about each as the time progresses…

Winter break was wonderful, as always. I spent three and a half weeks back home in Nice. The weather was cool but it was pretty much sunny everyday. It was great to be infused with French culture once again, taking long walks and generally spending some time with the parents and old friends. I’ve taken a lot more photos since the ones I posted in the gallery earlier and hopefully I’ll find a bit of time to go through the rest of them and post the better ones.

I’ve been surprised (and delighted) with the feedback I’ve received for High Priority. I’ve gotten a bunch of registrations (which always feels nice), but more importantly, I’ve had users write in with requests, comments, and general thank yous. It’s such emails that make writing software rewarding - knowing that someone else is finding your program useful. For anyone reading this whose looking to glean a couple of hints about what will be in the next version, I’ll give you a quick list: global shortcut to open the menu, ability to hide upcoming To Do items, ability to display due dates in the title, improved labelling, and a bunch of bug fixes. Not sure yet when version 1.1 will be released - most likely sometime around the end of this month. Well thats it for now, it’s late and I’ve got work tomorrow morning, as well as some reading and so forth. A bientot.

High Priority Update

Posted on January 5th, 2006 under News, Development

Well, steady progress has been made with my upcoming application, High Priority, and its now time for your help! If this is the first time you’ve heard me mention the program, you might want to read my previous entry for a description and the rationale behind it. Anyway, with the memory errors (double frees) and calendar parsing problems resolved, as well as pretty much all of the features I plan on implementing coded, it’s time for some testing.
