As 2006 nears, a redesign is called for…

Over the past two weeks, I’ve spent considerable time redesigning 3000 miles from home in an attempt to procrastinate from school work and provide a fresh new look for the upcoming year. What you’re seeing here is the result of many hours of tweaking fonts, whitespace, and colors. The redesign isn’t completely finished just yet; while the layout will remain as is, I might be modifying color and spacing a bit more, as well as integrating the latest version of PhotoStack into the site. Moreover, I’ll probably be moving a few links around, adding an archive to WordPress, and changing some of the text.

Why the change you might ask? I was not only tired of the grey design of the 2005 version of the site, but had also outgrown the current design. What do I mean by that? Well, the sidebar itself had become too prominent, featuring too much information. As a result, the site began to look like a hodge-podge of information, randomly placed here and there. There was a severe lack of whitespace and as a result, began at least in my eyes to appear childish and unprofessional.

The greatest reason for the redesign though was that it was time to separate my journal from the rest of the site. It’s still fairly well integrated with its own section and global search, but it’s no longer the first thing you see when you visit the site. Why was this important for me? Well, I’ll be graduating from Hamilton in a semester’s time and as a consequence, it’s time that I begin to think about finding a job. The last thing I’d like to do is emphasize the banalities of my life above the projects, research, and software I’ve written. With the new layout, each section has its own home and they are separated through imagery and structure.

Finally, it was just time. 2006 is right around the corner and as my friends know, I’ve been redesigning more or less on a yearly basis. As such, it was time for a new look which at least in my mind better suits my personality. Any comments are greatly appreciated - and please remember, at least for the next few weeks, the site will be undergoing some changes. I’ll be pruning my journal, checking for dead links, and putting on the final touches.

Enjoy!
