With less than a week before 2005 comes to a close, I guess it’s time to sit down and make my list of five favorite things. I think we’ll start with the most common categories and end on a more personal note.
Best Albums of 2005
It’s been a fairly good year for music. Having shared a radio show with Sean during the spring semester, as well as branching out a bit more than I usually do in the fall, I was able to hear a whole range of new artists. I’ve purposefully left out compilations as it’s hard to compare a compilation with an album by an artist. One band that I struggled with was Porcupine Tree. Anyone who knows me well knows that I truly appreciate their music and even went to see them this past summer. However, even though they released a new album this year, Deadwing, it simply wasn’t as good as In Absentia, and as such, didn’t make the cut.
* I stand corrected. Arcade Fire released Funeral in 2004 but I only just discovered it this year. Good, it gives me another slot on my list.
Best Films I saw in 2005
I didn’t really see too many new films this year so this list lacks diversity. Moreover, it should be titled best films of 2004.
* I know, Crash, Gunner Palace, and Hotel Rwanda came out in 2004 but I only just had the chance to see them this year. All three were such powerful movies that I felt they had to be mentioned.
Best Tools of 2005
These are the five sites I’ve come to use and visit the most over the past year. A runner up that just barely made the list was SpamBob that provides disposable email address for sign up forms and web sites.
Favorite Blogs of 2005
These web site were not necessarily published for the first time in 2005. In fact, hardly any of them were. These were the sites that I found during the year and have religiously visited.
Memorable Experiences of 2005
We’ll end on a more personal note. Five experiences that come to mind as I look back on this year. Of course, many experiences were overlooked and I just want to make it absolutely clear that time spent with others, from faculty to friends to new acquaintances, were just as memorable! [Update: As John points out, I make no mention of EMT work. So, to reassure him, all the calls - except those at 3 am for a “busted lip” were memorable.]
Hmm, it seems your year end wrap up lists/favorites (perhaps inspired somewhat by google’s zeitgeist??) has some surprising conclusions (or omissions?). Gunner Palace over Primer (if we’re talking MWPI films)? You do EMT work? I feel like things are missing, but a list always leaves things out somehow.
Hope your christmas was relaxing.

Adam, I stand corrected. So much for relying on ID3 tags … speaking of which, I should probably fix it.
John, you’re right. This list was odd but I just couldn’t see myself writing Top EMT Calls of 2005. Not really morbid, but a bit odd … and might breach too many confidentiality rules. As for Gunner Palace over Primer, call me simple minded but I just didn’t get it.

Thanks for listing my blog in your top 5. My blog was actually created in May 2005 :).
Glad you enjoy it.
cheers

I wish a could put Funeral as my top album this year, but alas I ranked it like #23 or something last year without really giving it proper time to sink in, though I feel that mistake will be repeated in my top lists of this year. I have not given enough albums enough time… I’ll just have to continually update my top lists I guess.
