Class and Charter Day ‘05

Posted on May 5th, 2005 under News

Today marked the final day of classes for my Junior year. Yet another semester has flown by, another four courses almost completed, and once again, it’s time to say goodbye to those we know. I’ve written before about Class and Charter Day but this year it hits home a bit more. With Sean and other seniors I know graduating, I’m finally coming to the realization that my time at Hamilton is becoming less as each day passes. The place that I currently call home will be a memory in a bit more than a year and life will continue. The friendships I’ve made over the years at Hamilton will continue, yet once again under go changes. No longer will it be as simple as walking next door to talk to friends; in the future, much like now with my high school friends, encounters will be made online or planned well in advance, often requiring substantial travel to simply spend a few precious days together. But enough on this topic - there will be plenty of time to lament on the future next year!

Electronics and Computers Final Project
Electronics and Computers Final Project

Instead, I sort of want to sum up, even if it is only for my own sake, the upcoming two weeks: exam week and senior week. Contrary to the name, I won’t actually be having any physical, sit-down, in class exams. For my electronics and computers class, I’ll have a final project to hand in, which as shown above (sorry for the noise; I used the S60 with a high ISO to not have to deal with the flash), is almost complete. In short, I’ve been working to link a surplus LCD with the MC68HC12 computer and display a game on the screen. After about eight hours of work yesterday on it, the LCD is working smoothly (although only half of the screen can actually be modified) and the majority of my text-based game, Avalanche, is complete. Hopefully by the end of today, I will have finished up the final pieces of code needed, completed the write up, and showed it all to the professor. Once that’s done, this is one course I will have completed and in all honesty, enjoyed tremendiously.

HCEMS Senior Dinner Photos

Posted on May 2nd, 2005 under News

The photos from last night’s EMT senior dinner and night out at the pub have been uploaded. This is the one night in the school year when the EMTs finally take a step back and simply enjoy the night, saying goodbye to the leaving seniors and afterwards, unwinding at the pub. Of course, those on-call have to forgo the open-bar and free drinks…and be content with the popcorn and abundant supply of non-alcoholic drinks.

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger: My Perspective

Posted on May 1st, 2005 under Apple

I was going to post a semi-review of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger but decided that there are enough good ones available already on the Internet that are broader and more detailed. Instead, I’ve decided to just post, similar to John Gruber, my thoughts about the latest operation system. This post, much like his is a work in progress and every once in a while, when I discover something pleasing, annoying, or just generally interesting, I’ll make a conscious effort to update this page.

Late Night Players, May Day, and a Soirée

Posted on May 1st, 2005 under News

What an enjoyable weekend; it’s a rare occasion when a Friday Night and Saturday can be as much fun as it was this weekend! With only one week of classes left, Hamilton celebrated it’s annual ‘Spring On the Hill’ as part of ‘Al-Ham’ weekend. What this translated to was a weekend full of organized activities, ranging from ice cream eating to concerts to comedians. The highlights…

On Friday, the Late Night Players, an improv sketch comedy group performed in the barn. The five guys were hilarious, well co-ordinated, and genuinely, or so it seemed, pleased to be performing to a fairly small crowd. The jokes were fresh, mostly because they were oriented directly at us; in other words, they were made purposefully to make fun of Hamilton. Some of the best skits came when they used the various anagrams that Hamilton College spells. If you have the chance to see the Late Night Players, I’d definitely recommend it!

May Day (April 30th)
May Day (April 30th

On Saturday (April 30th), Hamilton had its second annual May Day music festival. Granted, it was April 30th and indoors instead of minor field (as it was raining), but overall, it was a great success. I stayed for the first five performers (Dead Meadow, Rainer Maria, Jennifer Gentle, Virginia Coalition, and Tim Reynolds) but had to leave before the last, Pharcyde, performed. The music ranged from indie and alternative to jam band to acoustic guitar (Tim Reynolds toured with Dave Matthew) and finally, or so I was told, hip-hop rap. I spent a considerable time taking photos with my Rebel XT, using my own lenses and Sean’s Sigma 18-200 although the results were slightly disappointing. Even though I used a high ISO and tried to maintain fast shutter speeds, it was very difficult to compensate for the lack of light. I think an Image Stabilized lens (perhaps the Canon EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS USM) might be in store for me in the future considering that I enjoy shooting without flash.

In the evening, we had a laid back ‘dinner party’ with friends. In true French fashion, we ate late, had plenty of wine, and generally spent quite a long time at the dinner table. That might be a bit of an over statement as being college students, we had to improvise somewhat. Without enough chairs, we decided we’d do it Japanese style and eat around a very low, circular TV table. The highlight at least in my mind was the untouched chocolate cake that I was able to salvage from McEwen before they threw it away. The evening was wrapped up with Garden State, perhaps one of the best movies from last year. So there we have it, a fairly atypical Hamilton weekend that was truly a blast.
