Rebel XT First Impressions

Posted on April 14th, 2005 at 03:05 pm under Photography, News

I’ve now had the Canon Digital Rebel XT for three days and have taken many random photos to learn the controls and functionalities of the camera. In the past three days, I’ve finally begun to understand the intricacies of ISO levels, setting the correct F Stop, and so forth. Of course, there’s many, many more days of testing needed before I’ll even grasp a small percentage of the knowledge needed to take quality photographs!

Here’s a photo that I took a few moments ago with the camera set to the ‘P’ mode, allowing for control of depth of field, exposure controls, ISO, and focusing. One thing that I found extraordinary is the amount of detail the CMOS sensor captures - it is 8 megapixels after all. I was unable to see when shooting with my own eyes a spider’s thread but upon magnification of the image taken, I was able to clearly see it in the picture (it took me a few minutes to determine that it wasn’t an artifact or scratch)!

The lens I used was my Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM with a Hoya Super MC UV filter attached to the lens. Before this lens arrived, one thing I noticed about the camera itself with the kit lens was how little it weighed. While this is always nice when it comes to traveling, the camera feels a lot sturdier and easier to shot with the much heaver, metal lens. I also noticed how much quicker the USM lens was able to focus, given that there is a dedicated motor in the lens to aid in the focusing.

I’ll be posting more about my experiences with the Digital Rebel XT over the weekend once I’m able to explore campus a bit more. I took a run in the glen this morning and saw a couple of interesting shots that I might attempt to capture on Sunday. We’ll see…

Oh, if you’re interested in seeing the full size, 2.2 MB jpeg photo captures, you can download/view it here.
